Lake affect snow thunder

I was talking with some friends up in western New York which has been getting hammered with snow off of lake Erie for the last week. They said that during one of the nights they heard a couple rumbles of thunder. Is that possible ? I grew up around there and never had I heard thunder or seen lightning during a snow storm. Interesting to say the least......Weatherchef

Yes, if there is enough instability in the atmosphere and the ice content aloft is high enough, you can get lightning within a snowstorm just like any other storm. It's not as common, though.

Re: Lake effect snow and thunder

I used to live in Buffalo. I remember on quite a few occasions, a flash in the sky and a low rumble. Never quite paid enough attention to what it was, thought it might've been a Plow going by with the strobe on and hitting a snow bank or something.

Re: Lake affect snow thunder

I've lived in the Tampa Bay area all of my life except for a year and a half when I lived in Brimingham, AL. I was there during the 1993 blizzard. Of course, I had hardly ever seen snow, so seeing that much at once was interesting enough to say the least. But what was really strang was the thunder and lightning that came with it. I'll never forget that.
