Rita Situation Reports
|
|
Discuss conditions in your area relative to Rita here.
It's pretty clear in Orlando, and I don't expect much from it, our friends in the Keys will likely see the worst.

Reporting from Downtown Miami- its 4:pm and the sky is overcast and the wind is picking up. I live in Southwest Miami Dade County and I understand we saw some showers this morning.. but nothing significant.

My dad lives off of Killian in Miami Dade County. He told me that the gas stations and grocery stores were starting to get looong lines in the afternoon. Katrina caught alot of people off guard down there and I guess they don't want to take any chances with power outages, etc...
Here in Port Saint Lucie, we have had a few late afternoon showers (finally) and are happy to have avoided everything in the tropics so far this year!

Gobig I'm in PSL also and winds have been kinda gusty all evening. Do you know is this caused from a different system or is it because of Rita. I just can't imagine it being Rita this far north.

NWS Melbourne said an outer band from Rita would be reaching Port St Lucie around Midnight - 1:00 am and it is here. Wow raining really hard and I would estimate the wind gusts around 35 mph.

Debbie, from my understanding and looking at radar, most of the rain and wind on late Monday was actually from rita.
Talking to my family in Islamarada (Upper Keys), there is flooding 10 to 20 miles south of Islamarada across the highway.

Lucedale, MS. Clear skies. Unusual light gusty winds. More love bugs than I have seen in 30 years! Humidity seems down a little, too.

When Rita passed over the keys, we had gusty winds and a few small squalls here in south central Florida. She is now growing so fast that our weather here is much worse NOW. Strong winds and heavy thunder storms all afternoon and more expected tonight as her outer bands expand. My prayers go up for Texas.

Re: Rita Situation Reports

Perfect conditions here now. 95 Degrees Sunny Winds 5-10 mph from the south
Houston, TX / Sugarland, TX
50 Miles from the coast. The big worry we have is the fact that most of the area around us is very low. We are 70 feet above sea level, so no worries here, just worried about the storm surges effect on Galveston to Corpus Christy and Downtown Houston.

Hopefully, a lot of lessons learned from Katrina's landfall will be practiced for the folks in TX. The size of the storm will not surprise anyone that has been paying attention to local and national news sources.

The National Hurricane Center has announced that Rita's eyewall has made landfall on the Texas Louisiana Border.
Fox News is reporting two major structure fires in Galveston, both apparently residential buildings. One destroyed and the other badly damaged. A woman from one of the buildings is in the hospital.
Also a barge has broken loose from its moorings in Lake Charles, La.
The Weather Channel has aired video of the Port Arthur Dairy Queen being badly damaged.
