Skeetobite Maps

With TD#12/Katrina Skeetobite is trying out a few new features with maps. What do you like, what do you think is missing, what don't you like. About any of the Skeetobite maps around this site.

Especially the new track map now on the main page.

Re: Skeetobite Maps

Thanks all for you kind comments. All we have learned about these systems while developing our maps has come from these forums and from the assistance of several meteorologists around the nation.

Many of you may have noticed that our forecast track maps now include the true windfield radii with the forecast plots. We have provided the image below to aid in understanding what these "rings" mean.

According to the National Hurricane Center, an average 75% of the total tropical storm/hurricane is in the northeast quadrant of any given storm. As you view these maps, and the model/track maps provided by the U.S. Navy, you will see that a large portion of the storm is indeed offset to the northeast quadrant as evidenced by the windfield radii drawn on each map. The wind radii depicted in our maps is created using official data provided by the National Hurricane Center.

Please feel free to PM me, or better yet, any professional Meteorologist on this board with questions about the windfields. If I don't have the answer, I'm going to ask one of them anyhow ;-)

Enjoy. We hope you find these maps useful.

Like your new maps.

Have 2 suggestions.

Please don't forget to do some of the "cone" maps as you did last year.

And, with Katrina coming ashore in southeastern Florida (??) why do we have a map all the way up to SC/southern GA? We could have a little more detail if the maps zeroed in on the forecast area more.

Zoomed landfall maps can be found at SkeetobiteWeather.com and have not yet been made available for use by forum administrators.

The addition of the windfields to these maps was designed to replace the 3D cone affect from last year. Although it is a popular feature, many more asked that it be removed than asked that it stay... Personally, I loved it.

Keep em coming Skeetobite. All have been helpful - I particularly liked the detailed maps of '04 storms with street level detail of wind fields and found them to be very accurate to conditions here on east coast of central fla. New spaghetti maps are helpful particularly with TD's where NOAA/NHC have yet to publish storm tracks

SkeetoBite,

Your maps are awesome!!!! I do not know of any other maps that provide the information and detail that you have been able to put into your maps, while leaving out the clutter. Your maps are easy to view and they allow you to clearly understand the threats to the area's in intrest. Maybe we will someday have the NHC using your maps.

Re: Skeetobite Maps

Being involved in County Government the map detail is great. It allows you to see what the projected path is on a county by county basis. Most maps are just the state without much detail and you have to guess at the actual areas that may be affected. Please contiune to do this as well as the street level maps. I call those hurricane tracking for "Dummies" it lays it all out there.

Keep up the great work.

Re: Skeetobite Maps

I love the detail on the maps, particularly county and city for these storms making landfall, but I do feel that the intensity line may be a little misleading. For instance, as of the 5a advisory, the intensity at 4 days is hurricane-strength but at 5 days Katrina is well inland and dissipating; the line, however, shows hurricane conditions along the entire path.

I'm not sure best to remedy this, though. I like the wind swaths more than the cone, but unfortunately the wind swaths aren't available beyond 3 days. There is the NHC's inland wind model, but I'm not sure if they have the equations for that readily available. I'll keep thinking, though.

The line color truly gave us fits because the intensity doesn't change until the next forecast plot/intensity provided by the NHC. We debated just using a color coded dot for each plot instead of colorizing the connector line. We'll keep working on this.

We will be working on the inland wind models. Should be much easier to figure out mathematically and programmatically than the wind field forecasts

Thanks for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input. At this point, the only colors we are absolutely committed to are the intensity color codes and the logo/header detail. We will continue to adjust the base map colors until we find the best mix. Right now the biggest issue we have is that the base map land color is so close to the tropical storm line, wind field and symbol color that details are easily lost.

Here are the colors we are experimenting with for the close up landfall maps:

The new map is great. If you go to cooridinates and pull up the Google map and zoom in, you can see that it will come ashore in Sea Ranch Lakes and after crossing N. Ocean Dr. it will pass between Chippewa Lane and Winona Lane. The NHC should visit this site. It would make their job so much easier.

Re: Skeetobite Maps

The google map isn't skeeto's (most of it was my coding using some code and ideas from a few others) but it's about as good as that will get for now. Skeet's maps can do a bunch more. But it is another way to view the data. There's a lot of limitaitons with it. If you saw an isobar map, it was probably a cache quirk. There's no option for any of that.

Been trying to play with creating kml files for Google Earth too, but haven't spent too much time with it.

Excellent maps. I have started using these on www.saintsreport.com as part of our storm tracking. The bulk of our fans live in the path of hurricanes, or have family who do.

One thing I did notice was a small error in the BBS code given at skeetobiteweather. Whenever I used it, the linked map would open up to an error. This is an example of coding that is working for me.

Again, thanks for all the hard work in developing these maps. Keep up the good work!

Love the maps - flhurricane.com has become my "go-to" site for hurricane info.

A question about the wind radii:

Quote:

According to the National Hurricane Center, an average 75% of the total tropical storm/hurricane is in the northeast quadrant of any given storm. As you view these maps, and the model/track maps provided by the U.S. Navy, you will see that a large portion of the storm is indeed offset to the northeast quadrant as evidenced by the windfield radii drawn on each map. The wind radii depicted in our maps is created using official data provided by the National Hurricane Center.

Is this always true, no matter what the direction of travel for the storm is? It would seem that in the case of a storm traveling directly west making landfall on the east coast (i.e. Katrina in south Florida), the strongest quadrent of the storm (the leading right-hand quadrant along the path of travel) would be in the northWEST quadrant.

But I could be wrong...

The NHC is pretty vague in their documention. That's why they say that "generally" 75% of the storm is in the northeast quadrant. Here is an example of a storm traveling northeast and the rule appears to apply... generally...

In the spirit of those who watch the "line" so diligently. Would there/could there be any value in perhaps making the "line" thicker as it approachs land. This could take into consideration "jogs" that the NHC keeps taking the heat for. Just an idea.

Solid maps...much better that NOAA's 'thin black line." One enhancement would be to show the future projected track with days and times rather than showing the position in hours from the present ('12' hours, '24' hours etc. ).
From an information standpoint, this would make it more clear exactly when a storm is going to come ashore. Thanks!

Most of the computer world uses 1024x768 or larger resolutions. If I did use 800x600 I'd rather have a larger map I had to scroll around to see then a smaller one. Just my 2 cents.
