"Storm surge broke Camille's record

"Hurricane Katrina's storm surge — the wall of water pushed ashore when it struck the Gulf Coast on Monday — was the highest ever measured in the United States, scientists said Wednesday. Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, director of the International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University, said the surge at Bay St. Louis, Miss., was 29 feet. Scientists from Louisiana State University, using different models, said their estimate was lower — 25 feet. Either way, this hurricane easily surpassed the previous record, the 22-foot storm surge of Hurricane Camille, which struck in 1969 near Pass Christian, Miss."

Note: these numbers are from an area of the coastline that was hit by the northwest part of the eyewall, not the northeast. I've been trying to pull together some information on the storm surge, which did not follow the predicted pattern.

The mentioned area of high surge by Hurricane Camille was in the NE quad of the storm, to the east of the eye at landfall.
