Event Great Hurricane of 1846 (by HanKFranK)
A late season hurricane savaged western Cuba, causing severe damage and substantial loss of life in Havana on October 11, and then nearly destroyed the settlement at Key West early on October 12, 1846. This was one powerful hurricane--pressure readings from the region at the time suggest it was at least a category 4 and possibly a 5. It moved inland in northwest Florida and swept up the east coast on October 13, with widespread wind damage and losses to shipping noted all the way to the northeast. This furious storm is known to have killed at least 164 people.
