Event Gloria (by HanKFranK)
Hurricane Gloria swept rapidly from Hatteras to New England on this day. The storm featured central pressures in the category 3-4 range while moving along the coast, but winds were only in the category 1-2 range and spread over a broad area. The storm was losing tropical characteristics as it made landfall over Long Island, NY during the early afternoon. Gloria had been quite a formidable hurricane while east of the Bahamas, but eyewall cycles caused it lose its tight wind core going into recurvature, and it never regained it. Nevertheless it inflicted around 900 million in damage, and 11 people perished in the storm.
