MUST HAVE web software...
      #9123 - Thu Aug 14 2003 12:45 AM

1) Free Surfer. Free Surfer is a popup stopper and gets about 95% of those suckaz as they try to interrupt you from normal web browsing. It's completely free. You should start it before you launch IE or Netscape, and I promise you'll be amazed.

2) Ad Aware - Ad Aware began in Scandanvia by Lavasoft as a way to find and destroy spy programs on your computer. Some websites maliciously install tracking software, tracking cookies, or edit your registry without you knowing. They update it every couple of weeks as they find new spy programs. The problem with spy programs is that good hackers working for seedy marketing companies will often install 1 pixel sized gates to your pc in someone else's home page without them even knowing. Many people refer to this type of invasion as "scumware" which is exactly what it is. You didn't give these dolts permission to track your identity, keystrokes, visited websites or anything else - but they freakin' do it anyway. One caution - if you still use Kazaa (and I don't know who would with its users being sued), you'll have to reinstall it after you run AA. Kazaa has some hidden programs (allowed by the license agreement) to utilize your computer. I'm posting the link to Ad Aware's home site, but you have to navagate to one of the download sites that they list so you can get their program. Again, it's COMPLETELY FREE and will amaze you if you've never heard of it before.

That's the link to Lavasoft's download page. I got it from Major Geeks and then another link from there (wasn't hard).

3) Spybot - Spybot catches some stuff that Ad Aware doesn't and vice versa. It will also allow you to immunize your pc from harmful "bots" (programs that you didn't authorize that embed themselves in your pc and redirect websites, change your registry settings, etc.). I only found it tonight, but it zapped the message popups I was getting even while I wasn't on the web. A+ all the way on this one (also COMPLETELY FREE).

Scroll down to download.com "Download Here" and you can get it. I might actually send this dude a donation for his hard work. AMAZING.

Like I said, if you've never heard of these programs or have never used them, you'll be amazed what scumbags are out there screwing with your computer behind your back. Let me know how you like the programs and how much screwed up stuff you find when you run them!

Peace,

Steve
