Earthquakes, Fires, Floods, and Tornadoes
      #81 - Tue May 14 2002 10:44 AM

Yesterday we had a 5.2 Earthquake near San Jose, Tornadoes in Maryland, Fires near Los Angeles, and a Flooding Mississippi river. The damage near Ellicott City in Maryland was fairly bad, the flooding goes without saying, the fires are under control now, and the earthquake was enough to be felt, but not enough to cause major damage.

The weather patterns are setting up for a possible early season, but I'm not betting on it to stay that way, my guestimate for the first named storm is in July.

What do you think, though. We'll hold a little contest for picking the correct day (and put time in just in case someone else picks the same day) and the winner gets nothing, but a good mention on the front page.

July 12th, 5PM is my guess.

I probably will be wrong.

Hurricane Awareness Week 2002 May 19th-25 is next week, and I will be out of town. Make sure to check the NHC's site at that link to see some interesting bits of information from them.

I am going to go with June 11th, 2002 at 2:00pm EST.

I don't know why I picked that date, it's just a guesstimate. Plus, it's fun. :-)

Uh......I'm gonna say the Eastern GOM. Ok? Still sticking with the date, though.

Hey..I do BELIEVE we may get some rain today. Of course, I could be WRONG.

I believe we will see a June storm this year.
June 21st to be exact, the begining of Summer Solstice.
I do think that "Arthur" will see some US coastal action.
We shall see...

Hey Kimmie!!! Good to see ya!!

I was checking the GOM loops....there was some (well okay a LOT) of what looked to be like rain coming off the coast of Mexico and into the Gulf.

I think it will be a Cat 5.

(and for all those that don't know me, that's a JOKE)

A little udpate to my 13/8/3 post. We were discussing that over on the storm forum. I gotta get used to the news and the forum and where the action is going to be.

As I process more information, I think there are five main focus points for possible landfalls this year:

1) Florida - South Florida appears to be a target from the E, ESE and SE. The panhandle appears to be a target from the SW and SE. Depending on oscilations of the Bermuda Ridge, the flow should be at FL from the SE, and ridge should act as a block when its western edge is across FL, as a steering mechanism into the panhandle if when it's periphery is not beyond 85-88 degrees west.

2) Caribbean - What can you say? With so much area, at least one of the islands is bound to take a pounding.

3) US East Coast - whenever we switch to troughy periods, they're always in the game.

4) AL/MS Coast - As the Bermuda Ridge ebbs back easterly, as it will at times in late August through September, someone needs to paint a bullseye on this 160+/- mile stretch of coast.

5) Western LA/Upper Texas Coasts- If the western ridge pattern sets up as Bastardi has predicted - off of the Baja, then the Northerly and Northwesterly flow should be far enough inland to allow for a path of weakness between Lafayette and Galveston. Any mid-season storms (July, August, September) that make their way into the Gulf, have as good of a shot to hit here as anywhere. This, of course, assumes a block across FL and formation in the BOC and/or southern Gulf.

But I'm not ready to make my official landfall predictions yet. That will come on 6/1 or 6/2.

OOPS! #3 was supposed to say Coastal North Carolina. They get hit as much as anyone, so you can never discount a landfall in the outer banks or coastal regions of NC.

Hi Colleen, we got much needed rain yesterday, enough so that I did not have to water the lawn and my butterfly bush!
I am looking forward to the season and all the great postings at this site. I hope you and your family are well.

We did not get any rain yesterday. I could hear thunder last night, but it was off in the distance and never got near us. I guess the fires near Lake Wales are still burning because this morning the smoke was so acrid that it actually woke me up!

My family is fine...we have put our house up for sale with a realtor (we tried doing it ourselves, but didn't get much response) so we are hoping that it will sell quickly so that we can buy a new one and get into before summer's over. I can't take another summer without a pool.

Well....take care....Peanuts.. Good to see you back too.

There's another interesting "blob" just coming off the coast of Mexico? and now entering the GOM. I know it's just the time of year, but it will be interesting to watch it during the day. I'm not saying it become anything more than just a "blob", just noticing some of the action out there. In preparation for the future, you know.

I think we will have an early storm this year. I will say june 20th at 11am. This is much better than before! I really like the new format. I almost wish a tropical storm would come now and give us some rain, we need it bad!!!

Hey, All!

Lurked all last season, think I might do some talking this year. Glad to see a lot of the names that made this site enjoyable still here.

As for a guess as to when the first storm will be named, I'm going to go with June 26th at 5p.m. (EDT), and it won't stay around long.

Chris
