Evacuations
      #102 - Wed May 15 2002 01:35 PM

Where do you live relative to the coast, and what would be your threshold for evacuating?

Last time a major storm approached Central Florida it seemed as if more people evacuated than actually needed to. (Because of storm surge zones) Would you evacuate if a big one was heading your way even if you weren't asked?

It would all depend on the positon of the eye. I live on the river here in New Bern (off Pamlico Sound) roughly 30 miles inland. Storm surge is the big threat. We're well protected from the North but open to the South. I've been here since the Fran/Bertha storms, wiith Bertha posing the most surge in my area ( water and breakers up to the steps of the house). So ... a CAT 3 to the immediate East of me raises my eyebrows.. Above a CAT 3 .. Yep! ..I'm off to higher ground ( or a better protected facility). Totally evacuating an area is not an option. Hugo had effects all the way to Charlotte and beyond.. In my opion, you're better to seek substantial shelter in the local area then to fight the traffic and reentry problems. If you don't have home / property/ job... you should go... no matter if it's a CAT 1 and visit some other time. You won't be able to find ice for your scotch after the storms passed.

Depending on the situation at hand , Where I live a cat 1 is a Mandatory evac. Personally I would get off the barrier Island , But I would not leave the county unless a 3 or more was heading towards us. Storm surge is my main concern.

Tough call. I'm roughly 80 miles north of the Gulf, but in a basin surrounded by Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. There are all kinds of surge and flooding predictions. In New Orleans and Metairie, we are relatively safe in a Cat-1, Cat-2 or fast moving Cat-3 scenario. A slow Cat-3, Cat-4 or Cat-5 can be castasrophic here. There's nowhere to pump the water if it's already topped the levees. You'd just have to let nature take its course and dry up over time. I might leave if a direct threat of a Cat-4 is upon us. Our worst scenarios on the East Bank (north bank) of the Mississippi are more or less a storm coming up from the SW or SE and passing just south of the City. Either way, all the water piles up and over the southern shores of Lake Pontchartrain and into the city (due to the north winds). Most of my neighbors evacuated for Georges, but I had the beer iced up. I kicked back and hung out at home. There were reports of a 4-8 hour trek 80 miles up the I-10 to B.R. Then when the storm didn't hit, it was a nightmare trying to get back into the city. Again, I chilled. I predicted we'd get 50mph winds and a 1/4" of rain - both came true. I would ride out a 4 if I knew my wife and kids would leave ahead of me without badgering me to come along. So it's a definite if a 1, 2 or 3 is heading this way; a maybe if a 4 is heading this way and a very serious doubt if a 5 was coming. Local Fox-8 did a Weathering the Storm (they do one every year) back in 98 or 99 that focued on what a Cat-5 would actually be like here. It was pretty scary. The idea of sustained hurricane force winds 12 hours prior to landfall is a little too much for my psyche. Maybe a terrified hour or two would be worth it, but not 20+. That's just insane. Kudos to Frank P for enlightening me on some of the other issues surrounding a Cat-5 because he's the resident forum member with experience.

I live in Orlando, Florida, and that's 40-50 miles inland. The circumstances in which I would have to evacuate would be very dire. First of all, the storm would have to cross the state. As for the intensity, I'd probably go to a more substantial ground if a strong 3 came through. Anything above that and I'd get the hell out of here and in quick manner, too. Anything below a strong 3 and I just take some precautions, sit back, watch the news, keep an eagle eye to the sky and enjoy the bad weather!

Make sure to have a cooler with ice for that beer or Scotch. If I had my choice, I would head out of state to wait it out...........

Charley is gone. Too many people chose not to evacuate Punta Gorda.

Some evacuated to where the storm finally hit. Being as there was no clear direction in which to travel, it is not surprising.

Not knowing where to go, or if one could afford where they were going, are problems that need to be addressed.

That is why substantial shelters need to be provided for hurricane evacuees all across Florida. Everyone could be sure that the road they traveled would end at a safe destination where care would be provided.

Anyone living in a mobile home should go somewhere with better cover in any hurricane. Even a category 1.
