want an idea of the historic limits of hurricane seasons and events past? check these years out at www.weather.unisys.com
the years with suffix 'e' contained one or more impressive event hurricanes, the ones with suffix 'a' were very active and possibly contained a rare or extraordinary hurricane event. this is of course subjective, there may be other cases you might consider as being either an extreme event or active season. i ignored some obvious 'event' years like 1900 and 1938 that had very well known historic hurricanes, and focused more on years often overlooked. there is one joke year in there, see if you can find it.
1854e, 1856e, 1867e, 1869e, 1876e, 1886e, 1887a, 1893a, 1898e, 1904e, 1906a, 1908e, 1914i, 1916a, 1926a, 1932a, 1933a, 1936a, 1944a, 1945a, 1949a, 1950a, 1951e, 1952e, 1953a, 1957e, 1964a, 1978e, 1981e, 1984e, 1985a, 1990a
32 seasons, don't do that all in one sitting if you're on dialup. you'll go mad.

Haven't looked at them yet, but I have often wondered about the reality of 1914. It is hard to envision the conditions that would have produced such a sparce season.
Cheers,
