Here in DeLand Florida I did remarkably well. As a teacher we have lost 14 days total to these storms. I feel for polk county and for the schools near port charlotte. sounds like they wont even be open before christmas. I wonder if they are paying their teachers even though they are not there? I guess they have too. It felt weird not teaching for a week at a time and getting paid. I didnt even lose power with Jeanne and we only lost one day of school. So to all my fellow educators i feel your pain and wish you the best.

-Troy

I have the unique advantage of being retired from my former job and can get by without an income if I have to. But, no, my school does not pay when I am not teaching. We get paid for the hours we teach, not for the hours on campus. I don't mind though, I am there because I like to teach, have skills the 'kids' need and put up with the administrative BS (up to a point) so I can be there for my students.

I also feel for those that were hit hardest. I feel for the kids mostly because many, maybe even most do not realize how important being in school and getting an educated will benefit them later in life.

Take care!

Although I am not a fellow educater, as a mother of 3 children whom have missed a whole lot of school this year, I too can feel your pain! I feel so bad for both the educators and the children. These storms have caused tremendous impact on so many different aspects of life; it is just unimaginable!

You don't have to be an educator (in the formal sense) to feel that kind of pain. As a mom, you *are* an educator...don't ever forget that!

*EDIT: snipping URL because the google link isn't sticking and the article I linked lacks the supporting information.

Between the 4 Hurricanes, they're estimating over $35 Billion in damages - for Florida alone (they adjusted Andrew to $20 B in today's dollars).

Heh - you just know he won't be getting much sleep for the next few months. After my first two, I had forgotten about that. Now that my third is 8 months old, we're starting to lose sleep over her teething, but at least it isn't as often as the first few months

Oh - she was an angel during Jeanne - I had to drug my other two

Congrats again, Jason!

I am interested too. I still am watching that wave off of africa also. Paranoid I am and I admit it.

JB says this,"With the ridge near Japan still around, but a bit farther east, such an idea implies retrogression to me and the comeback of the Atlantic ridge the latter part of next week."
Does this mean that the wave off of africa has a better chance of heading this way like the others?

If this is a stupid question..remember that I am a real amateur.

Helen

Jenna Grace is precious! Her name is fitting. I hope you got your sleep prior to her arrival because I know for a fact - you ain't going to get it now!!! It took me almost a year before I could sleep all night. Best wishes though. I would offer toys and clothes but I donated all of her stuff to Charley victims. Make sure to take tons of pictures because they literally grow before your eyes. Ah, I love babies!

Your email was most welcome........always nice to have someone else who understands the potential catastrophic damage of a storm like Jeanne or the others.

I guess I am the odd one in that I want no memories of that horrible night. I have had a lot of pain and suffering in my life that I just soon leave this behind. I do however like all the people I got to chat with on here.

Colleen - is Denis Phillips from ABC 28 in Tampa the guy who always wears the suspenders?? Just wondering. There is someone and I can't watch him because he always wears the same thing - suspenders and it is so goofy. Hope he isn't a friend of yours!
