I have a little curiosity…
Statistically speaking, which named storm letter name has served host to the most category fives (ie, which is the most dangerous name on the list)?

A, C, D, and E have all been host to category 5 hurricanes 3 times each. I has seen two such storms -- coincidentally, Isabel and in the past two years.

I would not have expected the first couple of names to be the ones.
Actually, I know of Allen and, of course, Andrew. What is the third?
Since we have only been naming them with this system for the last couple of decades, I suppose if I were to have a complete record of which "letter" is host to the worst storms I would have to go by the storms numerical place in the season.

Anita in 1977 was the other "A" storm.
There have been 5 unnamed category 5 storms in recorded history, 4 of which made landfall as a cat. 5 -- 1928 in Puerto Rico, 1932 in the Bahamas, the 1935 Fl. Keys hurricane, and another in the Bahamas in 1948. Rounding out that list is one in 1938.
The list I went by is here: http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/satellite/satelliteseye/educational/cat5hur.html. The list itself has not been updated to include either Isabel or , the only two category 5 storms since the list was last updated, nor has Andrew been added as a category 5 storm in 1992.

Below is the answer to your question. This list includes the first letter of the name of all hurricanes achieving category 5 status from 1851 to 2004. In the event a storm was unnamed, the storm number for that year was used to derive the letter designation. For example; the 3rd storm of 1851 was unnamed, so "C" was assigned as the first letter.
A 3
B 2
C 3
D 7
E 3
F 1
G 1
H 2
I 2
J 1
M 1

Questions we have had so far:
Q: 155 mph winds are 1 mph short of Cat5
A: The reports wind speed in knots. We convert this to mph and round to the nearest mph.
Q: Andrew(1992) was upgraded to a Cat5 at landfall, this isn't in the map
A: While this storm was reclassified, the has not updated the official track data. We could easily edit this data, but feel our manipulation of the official data eleminates the integrity of the entire data set.

yea i have really bad lucck with my birthday..ISable and and the 1932 cat.5 hurricane..those all made their landfalls on my sept.5th birthday..nuts huh
i just hope this year i dont get even worse luck and get a hurricane up here on my birthday..like the old farmers almanac says..any thought on that on fella's..jk sorry i had too

well, using pre-named systems in the scheme is an interesting twist.. but it doesn't really hold up against scrutiny. the further back you go in the hurricane historic record, the less reliable it becomes.. prior to the satelite/recon era i'd pretty much discount the placement on the name list of storms, as the intensity is not very reliable in many cases and it is likely that numerous smaller systems that would be named today were never observed.

yes we were very lucky...we had minimal damage a rain drain fell down and an awning on a window...but thats about it...im just hoping and praying we dont have to do that again this year...we just went out and spent 100 on party supplies and presents yesterday...wish us luck;)....HAVE A GREAT JULY 4TH EVERYONE!!!!!
