Derivation of Terms...
      #68124 - Mon Jul 17 2006 05:08 PM

What is the derivation and meaning of the term, "invest"? Why is an "area of interest" called an "invest", and what exactly is meant by the numbers and letter combination of, for example, "97L"??

An "invest" is an area that is being watched for possible tropical/subtropical development. The numbers go from 90-99 then over again...the L is for Atlantic, E for East Pacfic, W for the West Pacfic... and so forth. If you see an 88 or 89 (892006)...that is just a test run. Hope that helps.

...and the derivation is from the word 'Investigate'.
