Luzon prepares for yet another strong typhoon - Durian
      #74197 - Wed Nov 29 2006 05:25 AM

The train of typhoons over the western Pacific aiming at the northern Philippines continues as Durian became a typhoon today and is tracking west.. Latest JTWC advisory has 90 kt. winds, but that figures to go up on the next advisory with the eye cleaning out and the outflow improving. Expected to make landfall on Luzon in about 36-42 hours. If the storm hits Luzon it would be the 4th typhoon to hit that island in less than 2 months.

As I suspected Durian rapidly intensified overnight and is now a 135 kt. supertyphoon. The track has shifted considerably to the south and it should make landfall sometime this evening probably over Cantanduanes province. It could pass very close to Manila in about 36-48 hours. How strong it will be by then will depend on how the storm is able to pick its way through the islands, but the official JTWC forecast is for around 95 kts. as it passes the city. The storm is expected to slow to a speed of about 5-6 kts. so flash flooding is a major concern.
