Dangerous Wipha approaching eastern China
      #78515 - Mon Sep 17 2007 07:39 PM

Wipha is a 130 kt. supertyphoon moving WNW toward the northern tip of Taiwan and eastern China, currently directly over the Japanese island of Iriomote. The official JTWC track has been edging west, earlier expected to pass 100-150 miles north of Taiwan, now expected about 50-60 miles and it could be even closer if it doesn't start to turn soon. However, it looks like the main threat is is eastern China where landfall is expected in less than 24 hours. The farther west track is good news for Shanghai (a city of over 13 million) which the earlier track suggested possibly a direct hit ... now looking like Wipha will cross a decent amount of land and weaken before reaching Shanghai.

I'm not real familiar with the topography of that part of China but just from looking at a map there seem to be a lot of deep inlets and bays that could be very susceptible to storm surge with the onshore winds pushing water inland. Hopefully the government is getting people out of the most dangerous areas.
