Help! - What do 'hurricanes' mean to you?
      #85715 - Mon Jul 06 2009 11:42 PM

Hello there, I'm new here, so please pardon me for my amateur thoughts!

Generally, what are the effects of hurricanes on SOCIETY?
Am i right to say that they can be 'psychological' - mental distress to victims, 'clinical' - health issues, and 'physical' - displacement of homes etc.?

Also, I know that the damages of hurricanes range far and wide, and it's not a happy thing, but I would like to hear for myself real experiences and comments in different viewpoints. I'd love to hear your personal comments as well!

Cheers, and thank you.

One thing is PTSD which is more common in humans that thought. As for me living in Fort Lauderdale I know that within a week I might have to pack all that I can in my car and leave the area for a new life somewhere else.

hurricanes represent a disaster that has a "societal" impact. they effect a large area AND media attention increases the scope of that impact far beyond the physically impacted area. A lot of work has been done in this area by the Deep Center - University of Miami.
