Cyclone Giovanna

Cyclone Giovanna was located in the western South Indian Ocean near 15.6S 61.6E at 10/12Z with winds of 55kts and a central pressure of 982mb. Giovanna is expected to move to the west southwest and rapidly intensify with landfall on the north-central east coast of Madagascar Monday evening as a strong Cat III cyclone.

At 13/12Z, Cyclone Giovanna was located in the western South Indian Ocean at 18.7S 51.5E moving west southwest at 12 knots with a central pressure of 929mb and sustained winds of 125 knots gusting to 150 knots (Cat IV). Landfall expected at 13/22Z about 50 miles south of Tamatave along the east central coast of Madagascar. Extreme damage to the biodiverse environment is likely as Giovanna crosses Madagascar. The cyclone should regenerate to tropical storm status before final landfall on Mozambique, Africa.
