Here are some peak, officiated U.S. wind gusts from Sandy. Obviously, Sandy was one monster wind storm.

Generally speaking, these anemometers were located at or below 30' above ground. Buildings taller than three stories likely received gusts as much as 15% or so above these reported values. Additionally, while representative, these reports do not necessarily capture the very highest gust occurring within any 25 mile radius. Again, another 15% or so higher could be estimated to have occurred within any given 25 mile radius where an anemometer was not fortuitously positioned.

The Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire, at an elevation of 6,288 feet, recorded the highest official gust from Sandy, clocking in at 140 MPH.
