A short story, for sue and anyone else who might care...
      Wed Sep 17 2003 07:30 PM

Thank you Sue. Actually, I'm probably going to see some heavy rains and definitely some wind. My local NWS is predicting 45-60 MPH on Friday with higher gusts...but that is not necessarily all due to Isabel. There will be a strong ridge of high pressure in Maine which is actually doing two things. One, it's keeping Isabel from making the dreaded northeast turn, but, two, it's increasing the pressure gradient so I'll still see some strong winds. But, nothing like it could be (and I can't wait to be able to say, "could HAVE been").

I'll probably have to resteak (or is that re-stake) my tomatoes, put away some patio furniture and put away my two patio umbrellas, but that's just as a precaution. And maybe I won't even have to do that. Just thankful that so far, so good. One thing I will definitely be doing is heading down the (for all you LIers or ex-LIers out the) Meadowbrook to Jones Beach to check out the waves. Supposed to be 15-20+!!! Richisurfs, if you read this post, don't get jealous...really bad rip currents.

We'll probably see some moderate beach erosion (more of a factor in the short lived "nor-easter" section on page 1), those winter noreasters really shread the shoreline, but not much else. Right now, I'd have to say my only fear is that I have a 50+ year old maple tree (they don't have deep roots) in my back yard with several dead limbs. We've also had a LOT of rain this spring/summer, so the ground, while not saturated, is still more moist than usual. A 60+ wind gust could either (1) bring all those dead limbs down, or (2) bring that whole tree down on my house. I'm not looking forward to that, and it's just a slight chance...but...

In 1976, when I was but 10 years old, we had a tropical storm plow through my area, and living with my parents at the time (as if most 10 year olds have their own apartments...sorry), we had two Willow trees, and they were HUGE (like 80 ft. tall). Well, one of them came crashing down, miraculously, between our and our neighbors houses. Would have possibly killed any of us, as dawn was breaking and I wasn't even out of bed...

My dad, I do distinctly remember, came up stairs frantically yelling, "It's coming down" Well, it was down before I could even realize what was happening...

And that, folks, is what got me into weather watching.

As long as it's so quiet, anyone else want to let anyone who'll listen, know how we all found ourselves on this great site? I love a good story...

PS Tell me to shut up if you want to. Anyone that is except for Isaro.....
