Chipping is an excellent thing to do - even if there is no disaster. Pets get lost.
Pease be aware there is more than one chip company - PetSmart uses AtHome, Vets use Avid (for the most part). I think there's another company too.
In my dog rescuing experience, I've always had to bring the dogs to more than one place to find someone that can read the chip. Some PetSmarts have more than one reader, most vets do have more than one reader. And no matter what they say, I haven't seen one reader read more than one kind of chip.
I'm not familiar with PetCo or other places like that.
Also regarding pets - make sure you have their meds and prescriptions at hand if you need to evacuate. And tranqs if they need em.
