The few lessons we learned after going through Charley in Oviedo, FL are: After the last "normal" dinner you eat and the dishes are all clean, run the disposal. We had fish for dinner about 3 hours before we lost power for 4 days. It was pretty smelly. Turn up the water heater, we made ours last for about 3 days at our normal temps. BE CAREFUL, if you have small kids I wouldn't do this. Charge every battery you can for power tools, etc. The best items we have are the camping stove and lantern. Dual fuel, i.e. runs on gasoline. I think the camp stove is substanially more efficient than a grill for boilng water. The grill does a marvelous job for frozen pizza, my wife perfected that technique. With the grill and camp stove we can cook anything. The camp lantern does a great job of providing light for a large portion of the house. The back of our house is a lot of glass, we placed the lantern out on a table on the pool deck and it threw enough light that we didn't need flashlights for the majority of tasks. A good ice chest is better than trying to keep the fridge cold, you don't lose as much of the cold air everytime we opened it. Just have a big party and cook everything you can't save.
