After evacuating a few times in the last two years, I found that Yahoo maps or Google Earth and a good GPS can make all the difference if the traffic gets bad - going around the traffic rather than sitting in it.
During Ivan I met a family evacuating from a location near me on the Alabama gulf coast. It took them 6 hours to get to the north side of Hattiesburg, MS. I was able to make the same trip in just under 2 hours by taking back roads.
