And let me add to that rant, that my mother called my biological father (they've been divorced for over 30 years) on Sunday, before Katrina hit. He lives in Marrero, on the west side of NO. He was evacuating with his son to TX, but they had only left that morning.
He said, "We didn't really pay attention to it that much until this morning. Has it made the news down there (in FL)?"
My mother said she screamed at him, "It's the ONLY thing on the news, you moron!!!" (And what's scary is this man works for the NAVY, as a data analyst!!! So he's NOT a total idiot. He's supposed to be smart. And he was raised in FL, so he knows what hurricanes are capable of.)
Yet another case of a potential future Darwin Award winner.
