News of Ocean Springs, Ms

My son & Daughter-in-law are residents of Ocean Springs. They evacuated to Tallahassee, Fl. But at this time, neither one of us have any idea of what has happened at his home. Does anyone know anything about this area first hand. Thanks

This is a news website that I believe serves the Ocean Springs area and the news is thus centered around that part of Mississippi.

Also look up the SATERN info request form for friends/relatives.

http://qso.com/satern/emailfrm.htm

I have been having trouble with the form however, when the page loads at all I get an error when i try to submit my info. I guess they are having internet trouble or not enough bandwidth. OR something.

I guess I might as well post the names of who I am looking for... I'm looking for my grandparents Charles & Mary McDavid who live in Ocean Springs.

Pllease email me if you know anything

Re: News of Ocean Springs, Ms

My advice if you are trying to reach anyone with a 228 area code and (cell phone's anyway) is to try text messaging. Don't even bother with home lines for a while. Text messging is the only way we have been able to make contact. It may take a while but the message will eventually get thru.

Occasionally, they have been able to call out but we've been unable to make any calls to a 228 area code #. Even family who evac'd to our house (Florida panhandle) are unable to recv calls on those phones while here in our house. Good luck.

I am in North Dakota but my family from Ocean Springs has evac'd to Florida. They are concerned about the neighbor next door to them who has health problems (diabetic) but yet decided to stay and weather the storm. She is a single mother who is very unstable. Does Anyone know anything about the area near the high school and Government Street and how to contact Emergency Services in the area to get them to check and see if the woman and her child are okay?

Re: News of Ocean Springs, Ms

If any one has info about Ocean Springs especially south 7th street, please let us know. My sister's home is there. She evacuated but had to leave her cats which are like her family to her . We have been unable to get any information on the area. But we do know that our aunts home in Pascagoula is totally gone. Also info about New Orleans East would be helpful as my mother had to leave her home there(she also had to leave her cats) and they don't know when or if they will be able to go back. Know that the news says N. O. is flooded but still hoping that her pets some how got out and away. My mom and my sister are ok ,Thank God,except for the worry and wondering about what is left of their homes. I am in Mo. They evacuated to Florida. My prayers are with all of you. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Just heard from a reliable friend who lives in the area and is on on site now, that many homes in Windsor Place, Ocean Springs are dry, roofs and windows are sound, and things appear to be in pretty good shape; so if you are interested in that one small area, remain optimistic.

Try to contact the reporter who did the fly-over video on MSNBC last night - it lasted many minutes, and covered approx. 17 miles of coastline east of New Orleans, ending at Biloxi, which is just west of Ocean Springs. If you can watch MSNBC, or find the video on their website, perhaps you can get him to fly further east and get more video............

i am sorry it has taken so long to post this! my sister-in-law managed very quickly to use a national gaurd satellite phone yesterday to tell us where they were. one of her family members managed to make it to ocean springs this morning to get them out of there. the reports from him are heart wrenching! he said the place is in shambles, total devestation. the normal 5 hours trip took him 10 1/2 hours. i was just down there last week visiting them, we left to drive back to mass. on saturday and now i see pictures of places i was just at that are totaly destroyed or not even there any more. i can not even put into words how devestated i am. reports from my brother are that his house is not even there anymore. everything they have is gone. my heart goes out to everyone down there and i am praying so hard that all of you hear from your loved ones and that they are all okay.

Hi again everyone,

I thought I would post that I have made contact with my relatives who live on North Street in Ocean Springs. They reached us via a very choppy cellphone call! We could only talk fro seconds at a time. They said that their house is dry and so I Assume the rest of that street, and probably the general area around North STreet ,is not badly damaged.
My father will be driving down to Ocean Springs starting tomorrow to pick up my grandparents. Hopefully he will be able to get in. Michie your story of 10.5 hours is promising in that at least they actually got into Ocean Springs. When my dad returns im sure he'll be able to give more info on teh conditino of Ocean springs.

Good luck to all

Just talked with my family who live on Sheppard Drive. The homes near them are fine. They didn't even have flooding in their home, just a tree limb through the window. However, they could not travel since most roads were closed, flooded, etc. They did manage to leave in a 4-wheel-drive truck and head out of state. So, the roads must not be TOO bad. I hope that your son's home was spared as well.

I sent you an email, but thought I'd post here too. Take care and God bless.

HER HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE BASE LATE THIS AFTERNOON TO CHECK ON HIS HOME AND ALSO, A FRIENDS HOME IN OCEAN SPRINGS. HIS HOME IS FINE & WAS NOT FLOODED- WATER ONLY CAME INTO THEIR GARAGE. THEIR CATS WERE ALSO FINE. DEBRIS IS ALL OVER THEIR YARD. HIS FRIEND'S HOME JUST A FEW STREETS CLOSER TO THE OCEAN WAS NOT SO LUCKY, AS IT HAD BEEN FLOODED UP TO THE CEILINGS- WHICH ARE NOW FALLING.

I heard most everything south of the railroad tracks, gone. That is hard for me to think about. I loved that part of Ocean Springs.

Here are satellite photos of the damage. They were taken after 1) water subsided, 2) cleanup on a lot of the streets to make them passable. Also just because you can see a roof doesn't mean that the house is undamaged; it could have been damaged from wind or it could have been submerged in water.

Use this in conjunction with mapquest to try to find the location you are looking for.

The little squares aren't really in the right place. You have to hunt and peck to find the right photos. Then, once the picture comes up, place your cursor over it, and then go to the box with arrows in the lower RH side and click on it to zoom in.

INFO ON OCEAN SPRINGS!!!

Here is a website for WLBT with a fifteen minute aerial video of Gautier, Ocean Springs, Biloxi and some of Gulfport.

www.wlbt.com/Global/SearchResults.asp?qu=Ocean+Springs
In Ocean Springs, everything south of the railroad tracks has been devastated by flooding. There is a lot of debris that has been pushed up across the tracks and in some areas the tracks have been uprooted and thrown to the side.

Prayers are with all the people there and their families. God Bless....

Hi there. I'm soglad I found this message board. My parents live on Chaucer in Ocean Spring, and have been told that the house is fine - missing a fence - but fine. Neighbors had a tress fall on the house, but otherwise the neighborhood is ok. My parents evacuated to Montgomery, AL, bu left there just a few hours ago trying to get back home. If I hear from them, I'll make sure to post here on whatever local conditions I can get out of them.

I do know that they have a friend who lives in Ocean Springs, and she has phone, power and water.I'm sorry though, I have no idea where she lives.

I'll keep hoping for the rest who've posted here to find their loved ones safe.

Re: News of Ocean Springs, Ms

wanted to pass along some limited info about ocean springs- my family has been able to get through to some of our relatives who waited out the storm. My aunt lives in the 8700 block of neptune and says only five houses are standing on her street, hers one of them (is wondering if tornadoes that followed are to blame?) she is now gathering photos, etc, and cleaning them up ... putting them on her porch to hopefully reunite with owners. she says it's pretty bad... but my grandparents and another aunt live on 1300 block of parktown drive and for the most part, she says, everything there is fine, just some tree damage, etc. finally, my cousin lives on balboa circle, which as i understand, is pretty close to the water, and in that general area things seem to be okay, too. we are just so thankful my grandparents evacuated ahead of the storm- and everyone who stayed is alive. i, too, have been frustrated by lack of ground pics out of the city- and can only guess that transportation in and out is still bad. i believe my aunt got power back on today... phones are spotty.

Re: News of Ocean Springs, Ms

My parents have returned home to a house with power, water and air conditioning (currently set at 70 degrees), but no land-line phone service, and very spotty cell service. They encountered no difficulty driving home on I10W, although they heard that I10E had a bridge (bridges) out and people were being re-routed.

The house on Chaucer Dr. is fine. No significant damage. No water, no broken windows, no fence (but hey, we already knew that!). The only items they can see that are damaged are the garage has no roof (or was it little roof?), the large tree in their front yard is dead - still standing, but definitely took a beating, and the roof to the house has taken some, but hopefully not terribly extensive damage.

Daddy said the rest of the subdivision looks like a hurricane hit (funny, I know). All the beautiful tree-lined drives are now formerly tree-lined drives, but those trees that fell have already been cleared, cut, and stacked off to the side. Mississippi is already rebuilding and cleaning up.

They are traveling to Mom's office tomorrow (in Biloxi) to survey the damage and collect what things of Mom's that they can. The office has taken significant damage, and will be relocating to the much smaller Jackson, MS office to continue business.

Walmart is back open, the banks are open for a few hours a day, and a few local gas stations have gas, although the lines are said to be anywhere from blocks to miles long (depending on who you want to believe).

Just thought I'd update y'all with some positives.

I have family there also. The Winn Dixie and Walmart are open for business. The retirement center on Porter suffered minimal damage. The Manhatten Grill lost it's roof. The old trees along downtown really suffered. I hear that the water areas are wiped out. The immediate downtown is fairly OK from what I've heard.
