Yes, and Europe has an exponentially better system of public transit than the United States, especially with regards to trains. Many major cities have local trains, but to get from one city to another by train in most of the country is a difficult, and often times impossible, task. Outside of the northeast corridor (say Boston to Washington, DC), Amtrak is barely a blip on the U.S. radar. In fact, it doesn't even serve a lot of major U.S. cities - and in the ones it does (again outside of the northeast coast), often times ONE route stops there once a day. Rightly or wrongly, the United States is much more dependent on driving than Europe is. It's obvious we need to change that. |
