EarthQuake After Shocks?

At what measurements would aftershocks be felt on an earthquake? Also if this was a 6.0 could this be the build up to a greater seismic quake. I have such a hard time with this earthquake thing without suspecting other things with the you -know- what -date so close etc. Any information on this would be appreciated.
