Global Warming and storm intensity

The debate on whether global warming is causing the bigger storms like Katrina, Rita, and Wilma is on once again. See the attached link.

In my humble opinion it seems that the better the technology the better the records. Are we having more Cat 5 hurricanes? Or were there others, but they went undocumented because planes couldn't fly into these monsters, and there was no practical way to measure storm intensity.

Are we "seeing" more storms because of the satellites? Were they there before and no one knew or cared? A storm was a storm and if your ship happened to be caught in a storm in 185o did it matter if it was a depression or a vigorous tropical wave?

It is an interesting topic for sure, and I suspect the debate will rage for years about what could be or what it use to be like.
