While some of the larger-scale dynamics wouldn’t seem too favorable for a tropical cyclone in the Central Pacific, the GFS has been quite persistent the last few days in showing a high-end Tropical Storm in the vicinity of the 50th State a week from now. There have been far more near misses (or storms dissipating just east of the islands) than hits over the years, but nevertheless, people in Hawai’i or with plans to travel there this week should keep at least half an eye on the situation. Hawai’i is much more susceptible to the effects of a TC than places on the mainland.. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center will of course be monitoring for possible development and issuing advisories if and when they might be needed. |
