In July 2011 flhurricane will be moving to a new hosting arrangement with hostdime.com. It will be on a faster "pipe" and contain two servers dedicated to flhurricane (instead of the one currently) . The static image network will go up to 5 servers (From the 2 now), and the o/s will be upgraded.

In fact, one of the servers from hostdime is already activated on the image network (Image5.flhurricane.com) . Atlantic.net has served us well since 2005, but it is time to move onward.

This should generally improve the performance and uptime during any hurricane related events.

This upgrade will enable us to start putting up upgrades that we have been held back with, including better wiki support, more mobile data, and an entirely new open (odata) based service structure for people to use real time storm data, and a large open source mapping data, collaboration, and media collection project related to Atlantic Tropical Weather.

The current goal is to switch flhurricane to the new network officially by July 19th, 2011. This upgrade will include the faster page loading and upgraded wiki section of the site. Beyond that, we will start opening up lots of storm related data to services, including graphs, storm data information aggregation, and data mining related to storms, the goal for the first data of that is mid August. Soon after the first bits of the new mapping system will start to show, and it is expected by mid hurricane season 2012 it will be fully open sourced for collaboration on high quality maps and data for hurricanes in the Atlantic ocean.

A lot of development work into flhurricane has been awaiting a new setup, and this year is when we start to implement that. The goal is to give information in a useful way to everyone to help make more informed decisions during hurricane related events, and allow to go back in the past to see patterns on what to do an not to do in the general goal of reducing hype in favor of solid information.

This is still is and will remain a "free" site and partially runs off donations and tips (See the donation link) and any help there would be grateful. We aren't aiming to be a "one stop shop" for storm information, but we are aiming to be accurate and informative without the hype.
