I have noticed similar actions by animals in Indiana an hour or two before we get a nice severe storm. I notice it the most with birds that seem to almost be panicky and "running for cover". I believe most of this activity can be blamed on the birds enhanced sensitivity of atmospheric pressure. Pressure drops...they feel it and know its time to hide. Kinda like a someone with arthritis "feeling" the weather change - animals are just more "in tune" because they don't have TWC or CFHC. Any thoughts?
