August 25, 2006 Max Mayfield calling it quits: verdict on his tenure? Leaving at season's end. The director of the National Hurricane Center, Max Mayfield, will step down after this year: "I'm tired," he said Friday, providing the simple explanation for his leaving. "I'm tired of staying up till midnight, 1 a.m. The last two seasons have taken a toll. It's time to move on." Mayfield walks away from his $156,000 job, effective Jan. 3 to give the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration plenty of time to find a new director. He already is promoting Ed Rappaport, the center's deputy director and a veteran forecaster, for the role. |
