Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Nice job Jamiewx! Cloud tops were as high as 65kft. Things are quieting down now, but Brevard County really got hammered earlier this evening with a few small tornados and some reports of hail. We had a weak negative strike on the property about 25 yards due west of the house. The bolt hit at the base of a large southern pine about 5 feet above the ground and the strike point smoldered and flickered a few flames for about 20 minutes before the rain cooled it down. Bettye saw the bolt hit (like a sharp gunshot) from the back porch. About 20 minutes later the rain stopped for a short while and I went out to check out the tree. The tree is fine - not cracked or split - and you could barely find the impact point, and it had already totally cooled down, so it must have been a very weak strike. And thats close enough for me, thank you very much
Cheers,
ED

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

(The above radar image has been constantly updating, and things have quieted now from a few hours ago with the loss of daytime heating)

Thanks guys, yes its been a pretty active afternoon here in Lake County as well. My weather radio has been going crazy with warnings. Did get a couple tornado warnings by radio too, as Brevard County is not covered by the Orlando NWR transmitter. Looks like there might be a chance for Severe Storms again tomorrow, but not as widespread as they were today. Also that negative strike must have really shook the house, did you loose power? I'd like to find a picture of that type of a strike occuring, a picture that shows it orginating from the anvil and how skys can be nice and blue where the lightning hits. It helps me in explaining it to people and gives them a visual image. But when there is not too much Tropical Activity I like to turn to afternoon thunderstorms. Spike, you should see about getting a portable Weather Radio, you get the warnings first, it was funny because i would get the warning by weather radio and then hear it about 3 mins later on the regular radio station. They are a great way to stay informed, and to get updates on the status of a warning. Also Ed, How can you find the height of cloud tops, not that i usually look, but i would be nice to know.

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

today in central,fl. we heard the emergency broadcast system talking about tornados somewhere in northern polk county, and Brevard county. We got loads of rain. So we can definitly tell that our season has begun.

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Another interesting thing i read when reading the NWS discussion was that some of the forecast models were indicating a sudden break in that recent heat wave, (mid to upper 90s) and how that indicated the start iof the wet season. I'm glad it started when it did, i had been telling the neighbors, whose grass is quite brown, that the wet season would be here by this weekend and they were holding me to it. Also, I like coming to this site, i find other students who like weather too, there was not a single kid at my high school, where i just graduated from that liked weather. So i am happy.

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Hey guys, You should try taking pictures of Storms as well, here is one i took over Mount Dora last summer, of mammatus clouds, we did have a couple of tornado warnings, and some of the storms were severe. We would go out on the lakes in the summer and i would be snapping pictures of all the storms in the distance.

Would you use just a regular camera or would you need any special equiptment?

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Cosmo, I'm not sure about taping storms in progress over your area, or do you mean in the distance. All the pictures i took were of storms quite a way off. Guess a video camera will work fine, thats how the take the footage of tornado chasing right?

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Well, that was a developing storm, don't think it was even producing any lightning at the time, i also don't remember exactly how far away it was. I like my other pictures better, that was just a cumulus cloud, i have taken some of cumulonimbus clouds too over lakes.

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

Saying that however, when we flew back from the UK last year, it was so neat. As you approached florida, you could see all the storms or cumulus clouds lined up along the coast. And i will tell you that even showers produce rough turbulance. We got thrown around a whole bunch up there, and that wasn't even a fully fledged thunderstorm.

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

I wouldn't mind chasing one with someone who was trained and knew what they were doing, and wouldn't mind seeing one from distance, but to have one heading for my house i have to say no. The eye of a Hurricane must be pretty cool to experience, a dead silence with no birds or anything.

Cosmo (Kramer?)

Dont want to dampen your enthusiasm but...your statement:

>>>we need a good hurricane or tornado soon because ive been wanting ro see 1 bad ive heard that some mans house was shreded by 1thats what im wating for but ill mostly see tornados more than anything since i dont live near the ocean i wouldnt see many i live in town.

Don't think you really want that. As they say, "be careful what you wish for." Talk to some of the mets or major posters on this board and they'll tell you what's what.

BTW Welcome to the boards...keep in mind these posters are almost pros (and some are). Personal observations and insightful comments are always welcome...

Re: Strong storms developing over the FL Peninsula

I'm sure seeing the eye would be very exciting to see. Not many people get a chance to see that in person. And LI Phil I agree with you about the tornado, there is no way i would want it to hit my house, but it would be cool to see from a distance.

Strong storms possible again tomorrow

Well guys, i'm signing out until tomorrow, everything has about dissapated now with the loss of daytime heating. Be ready again tomorrow though, although we have not been catagorically outlooked for a slight risk of severe storms by the SPC, it looks as though a few storms (not as many as today though) could become strong or severe tomorrow as well. That being said, lightning is the #1 killer in florida and it comes with any thunderstorm severe or not.
