The Dating Game

This contest takes no skill - but it is not that easy either. We've done this in the past when things are quiet in the basin, so lets try it again and give you something to ponder. If you are good with climatology and statistics it might help - but then again it might not. The contest is in two parts:

1. What is your best guess for the date that Tropical Storm Bertha will be named?

2. What is your best guess for the date that the first Hurricane will be assigned, i.e., the date for the first time this season that a Tropical Storm becomes a Hurricane?

I'll use Universal Time (GMT) to determine the dates and I'll close off the contest at the end of the day on July 1st - that gives you up to ten days to develop your answers. Remember, this is just a 'fun' thing, but somebody is going to get lucky. I'll post my 'guesses' when I close out the contest. Give it your best shot - its open to everyone.
Cheers,
ED

Re: The Dating Game

Ed - Ok, I'll poke a shot at this one! Bertha to be named between July 1 and July 2. Hmmm, guess I've got to pick the specific day...... Ok then, will go with an 8:00pm "Special Advisory" naming on July 1. Guess is somewhere between 55-65 degrees West longitude and at, or south of 18 degrees Lat. As for first hurricane? Well, that WILL be Bertha, but late on the day of July 3rd, and just prior to landfall ( with a heading of approx. 290 ). Perhaps a little unwelcomed "fireworks" for one of our Caribbean neighbors, in advance of Independance Day.

Re: The Dating Game

Well this used to be a rather popular and fun thing to do but I guess that interests have changed, or the basin is just running on the quiet side which means that the site activity is generally low. I'll extend this 'guessing game' for a few more days - through July 6th. You can even update your 'predictions' if you wish - and thanks to the five of you who were willing to stick your neck out.
Cheers,
ED

Re: The Dating Game

Tropical Storm Bertha named on July 24th...

...and then a Hurricane on July 27th.

I assume this can be wadded up and filed now...

Re: The Dating Game

Bertha just about put an end to this 'fun' contest before it ever got started. Kudos to 'weathernet' for almost nailing this one. For what its worth (and not much) both of my dates were in early August
My thanks to those that participated.
