Typhoon Dianmu
|
Check out Typhoon Dianmu - an eye is becoming very clearly visible on satellite imagery:-
Typhoon Dianmu
It's now forecast to become a 140kt CAT 5 in about 72 hours. Judging by the storm's rapid organsation, it could reach that intensity even sooner. The W. Pacific is only on it's 9th system, and already they're anticipating the second CAT 5!

Yeah, I've been watching this one for the past day or so...I got a buddy who lives in Tokyo, and now is their 'rainy season'. He might be in for a tad more than that from this one.

Typhoon Dianmu was a 70kt CAT 1 storm on NRL this morning, and now it's a 120kt CAT4! Now that's fast strengthening! What's more, it's now forecast to become a 150kt CAT 5. NRL puts it not very far south of Japan in 5 days - as a weakening 105kt typhoon. Looks like your friend from Tokyo really is looking at more than rain. Looking very impressive on satellite imagery - it is huge and now has a pinhole eye.

Wow...now it's 145 knots (category 5 supertyphoon) and forecasted to reach 165 knots in 24 hours...that's tying Supertyphoon Tip's intensity. And at it's current rate it COULD go even higher.

Now it's up to 165 knots with gust to 200! Still forecasted to be a CAT III close to landfall.

Well that didn't work.
Did try to post a different image (in the E&N Forum) and it DID work. But that time I was able to "copy shortcut", whereas with the image above, I was a straight cut & paste.

This is one impressive storm, and as Rob M said, at it's current rate of intensification it could go even higher! Could we have a record breaker on our hands here? If it reaches the forecast intensity, it will be the strongest typhoon since 1979. Maybe this could turn out to a very active year in the W. Pacific. Most likely nothing to rival 1997, though. That year they had 10 CAT 5, and four of those had sustained winds of 160kt!

Good lord, look at the size of this thing...
I wouldn't want to be a ship out in the pacific, that's for sure (I guess I should say, I wouldn't want to be on a ship out there.

It's not forecast to reach 165kt now, but it is forecast to reach 160kt, which is still phenomenally high. Right now, it is a 150kt typhoon, so it's at about the strength of Maemi last year. Japan really needs to watch this one.

SUPER Typhoon Dianmu

Just a quick update - Dianmu is currently packing 155kt winds with gusts around 190kt
It is expected to peak at this strength, and is expected to maintain it for about another 12 hours. This ties Dianmu with Super Typhoon Faxai in December 2001.
It still looks very impressive. It is huge and has a symmetrical 16 mile wide eye, which is tiny by comparison. If the storm maintains this organisation, the winds may take longer to slow down than is currently being forecast.

Dianmu is now down to about 120 knots and starting a turn more to the north. The Typhoon is expected to pass close to Kadena AB in about 24 hours. Here is a link to the current weather conditions on Kadena:

Looks like it will make landfall as a 75kt CAT 1 typhoon. It is looking quite ragged at the moment, and it will probably weaken fairly quickly from now on. On another note, there is a new invest in the E. Pacific. Apparently, there is a potential for some slow development.

Here in Daegu we've been monitoring Dianmu (the Goddess of Thunder and Lightning) as we get periodic fringe effects from typhoons. This one is forecast to track across us after landfall and due to the weather the last couple years there will be some forest cover damage due to stressed trees. Been through many 'canes along the Gulf and Atlantic, this will be my first one at this latitude in the western Pacific. Are photos allowed to be posted here if I register?
