Privacy breached - receiving spam from other weather sites.

I was under the impression that our privacy was assured and that our email addresses would not be shared or sold.

The email address I use here is my work address, and unknown to any site other than this one. Yet last night I received a SPAM invitation to another weather forum using my work address.

I would like a complete explanation of why our email addresses are being released and/or sold. I have since changed my address to reflect my "junk" account. I consider this site important enough to have given it my main account, but cannot do that if our addresses are being released for spam.

I've never had a problem with my info on this site, and would caution anyone not to assume this forum to be the culprit. Still, I share your concern and I'm sure the administrators will look into any possibility that a person's Email address could have been compromised.

It's not, unless you have allow private messages to be emailed checked on the profile page (they could send you a PM notification, but shouldn't get your actual email) . If you still aren't sure, forward the email to mike@flhurricane.com and I can track it down (If you can or know how, send the internet headers also)

I received the same email yesterday and I'm assuming it could be from a member who is registered here.

I got an email yesterday that I thought at first was from here. Only after I opened it and went to the link did I see it was a spam. Ugh.

Mike, my setting did allow for PM notification, I've changed it. However, the message I received wasn't a pm notification. I forwarded the message to you complete with headers. I see a couple of other members received the same message. I suspect if you asked more users you would find they also received the same message. I visited that forum, and there were quite a few new users who joined yesterday and today. Just an FYI.

Thanks for looking into this.

I'm not sure why Stefan did this, but the fact that there is no public viewable email for you and a few others is worrying I did see some log access from that IP that was embedded in the email you sent, so I'm working on it.

Bev,
It may not sound true in today's society, but we "Central Florida Hurricane Center CFHC aka flhurricane.com" do not run this site to make any money. We do not sell or give out email addresses. You being a member since 2004 should know that. We try to keep our software up-to-date on security , sometimes hackers and spammers slip through. We try our best.

I just want to be clear by no means do we purposely give out or sell anyones personal email address.

Thank you for bringing this spam to our attention.

John

Just a note here that I got a notification from S2K this morning that their security had ben breached - - they are also working on the problem. I guess a lot of people know that these sites are getting hammered right now. Thanks for looking out for us.
