Hi there, I'm a novice at this based in the UK. I'm hoping to travel to Sarasota, Florida around the 22nd September this year. I just wondered from people's experience whether there is a high risk of hurricanes around this time. Greatly appreciate your help. Saul |

Saul: The short answer is yes, there is still an elevated risk of hurricane activity in Florida at that time of year, however, the Sarasota/Tampa/Clearwater area has not experienced a hurricane in quite some time. Often in late September through October, Tropical Storms would be a greater risk in the Gulf of Mexico and they often recurve toward the northeast and make landfall on Florida's west coast. Hope this helps you in your planning, however, I wouldn't necessarily cancel a trip because of that threat. The chances of any one small piece of shoreline getting a direct hit from a hurricane are mighty slim. I think that one of our Moderators, HanKFranK, has commented on this in the past. Cheers, ED Added: I should also mention that one of our site meteorologists, Rich B, is from your neck of the woods (U.K.) and may be able to help you with the statistics that you are seeking. |

I believe the Florida Record for Number of Hurricanes in a 6 weeks time period would be in 2004. Looks like 4 strikes to the Florida Peninsula in 2004. And 1 strike to the Panhandle. Of the 5 strikes that year Charley, Ivan, and Jeanne were Major Hurricanes at Landfall. 3 - 13 August 2004 Trop. Storm Bonnie http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004bonnie.shtml? 9 - 14 August 2004 Hurricane Charley- Rapidly strenghtened to a Cat. 4 at landfall http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004charley.shtml? 25 August - 8 September 2004 Hurricane Frances- Cat. 2 at landfall http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004frances.shtml? 2 - 24 September 2004 Hurricane Ivan-Panhandle Strike http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004ivan.shtml? 13 - 28 September 2004 Hurricane Jeanne Cat. 3 at landfall http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004jeanne.shtml? http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/tracks/2004atl.gif |
