I found this article due to trying to find something to read as the rain is drowning out picnics and fire works.
It sounds like they are already drumming up excuses as to why they are going to allow another Katrina like disaster to occur if it does. The government is going to do its homework before they jerk the funding so they can document that the NHC was "having problems" earlier in the year with the people in charge. It would not matter who is in charge if the equipment does not work, the government won't fix it or the satellites are in use for war reasons rather than weather reasons.

I wouldn't put anything past this crowd, but Connie Lautenbacher, who heads NOAA, is s straight-shooter and would not be part of something that cynical.

There was a report yesterday on the local Fox affiliate (Channel 13, Tampa) about the conflict between the current NHC director and the Feds. He was complaining about budget cuts and waste and the Feds seem to be labelling him incompetent or at least incapable of leading the Center. Sounds like it is getting nasty! As for me, I don't care if they can get along, I just want them to do a good job of predicting and tracking hurricanes....
