Active Seasons
      #90490 - Sat Jul 02 2011 04:42 AM

Since the average totals in our annual pre-season contest were 15/8/4, here is a list of all previous highly active seasons since 1885. A total of 19 seasons (14.8%) have had 14 or more tropical cyclones of Tropical Storm or Hurricane intensity. Here are those years with their storm totals, the date of the first storm and the date of the second storm:

1887 - 19/11/2 5/15 5/17
1916 - 15/10/5 5/13 6/28
1933 - 21/10/5 5/14 6/27
1936 - 16/7/1 6/12 6/19
1953 - 14/6/4 5/25 8/11 (interesting year - no storms in June or July)
1969 - 18/12/5 7/25 8/11
1990 - 14/8/1 7/22 7/24
1995 - 19/11/5 6/3 7/5
1998 - 14/10/3 7/27 8/19
2000 - 15/8/3 8/3 8/13 (no storms until August)
2001 - 15/9/4 6/5 8/2
2003 - 16/7/3 4/18 6/28
2004 - 15/9/6 7/31 8/3
2005 - 28/15/7 6/8 6/28
2007 - 15/6/2 5/6 5/31
2008 - 16/8/5 5/31 7/3
2010 - 19/12/5 6/25 7/22
2011 - 19/7/4 6/29 7/18
2012 - 17/9/1 5/19 5/26

Interesting to note that there has never been a season with 20 named storms. Since the current period of high activity began in 1995, there have been 12 highly active seasons in the past 18 years. From 1885 to 1994 there were 7 highly active seasons in 110 years.
