The Fourth Tropical Depression of the Season Forms near the Cape Verde Islands
10:56 PM EDT - 18 August 1999

Advisories should be showing up shortly for our newest Tropical Depression of the day, TD#4.

This storm will trek westward and likely quickly form into the second Tropical Storm of the season. Will this one or the one in the Gulf be named Bret? I would say, with the current looks of the systems. Bret will be in the East Atlantic.

We Will have time to watch TD#4. More updates tomorrow.

For more information on TD#4 see the
Current Storm Spotlight for TD#4.
For more information on TD#3 see the Current Storm Spotlight for TD#3.

I am trying to keep up with you all on this great web site, i do not often post in other web sites but i have to say this is a well done page, Lets get to the system in the Atlantic , after looking at the obs im in favor of thinking that anybody that does not think they are looking at breat is out to lunch on this one, however we need to keep a close watch on this system, i have been going over some ship reports and a sustained wind of 40kts has been reported by a ship just to the SW of this system with some gusts to near 55kts as i posted on this site the other night i was saying that it was coming off the African coast and that development was possible with this system, im also going over some long range models and they are building a ridge in the atlantic by fri , this would tend to keep this system on a west track, it is way to early to say but i would really want people to please keep an eye on thin one as it has the potential to run a long way west before ever getting a chance to curve north , i will keep posting on thin page as they update the tab on this page, if you are trying to reach me by e mail , than e mail me at florida wx or look me up on line as im on as florida wx , im happy to chat weather with any of you ans to share thoughts, again to the folks who have put this site up i say good work Mike south fl wx.

Like clockwork, it starts up.

I'll go ahead and apologize for the auto-generated tracking map of TD#4 as it doesn't quite go far east enough to be picked up right now. It'll show up around 25o West or so.

I'm going to work on getting forecast tracks in those maps over the weekend.

And have an "accidental spam" catcher for folks that hit the "post" button more than once by accident. :) No harm done, Mike.

sorry for all the same postings (#5)

I know that the newest footage of loops is only a few hours old but I think that I see this #3 getting kicked towards the middle of the Gulf. I have taken care not to listen to reports of what the media thinks it is doing so that I can practice my skills of observation first. Does anyone think this is a trend or just a short term anomaly?

First, I agree with everyone that we have a major system brewing in the Atlantic. I believe some of the models have it moving slightly west of north and then turning back west. This should be the storm that gets the Cape Verde season rolling, I think we'll see a "parade" of stroms from this point on. As for the Gulf system, I think the center is possibly reforming a bit to the northeast of the newest convection, but this does not necessarily mean a change in movement. i still think this will move into the mexican coast as a weak tropical storm (Cindy?). Mike A., I enjoy your comments when you post. Do you think the Gulf system has any real potential to be a threat to the US?
