Interesting information that all who live in those areas should read.IMO New Orleans should be in the top of that list as it is below sea level.

Great...look what's #2. Remember I'm only about 30 miles away from Midtown Manhattan.

I tend to agree, but we don't have the $ value of real estate that Miami does. Nonetheless, if they were talking "loss of life", it's New Orleans hands down. In the worst case storm, only 2/3rds of the population would even evacuate. There are enough doomsday scenarios with Cat 3's that could put the city under 15-20' of water in a heartbeat. And many of the urban poor don't have a clue how to swim.
On the other hand, it would be pretty fitting if the city died off due to a major storm.

Steve, dude...what the hell are you talking about? I hope that comment was made tongue-in-cheek; Yeah, it's below sea level and all, what, that would be poetic justice?
I agree that NO is ALWAYS at risk, but calling it "fitting" to have an entire city destroyed? That's crazy talk.
Please let me know you are kidding.

Agreed....I have no doubt in my mind that our city is more vulnerable to hurricanes than any other area in the United States.....probably #2 worldwide. We're talking about 20-30 feet of water....it doesn't get much worse than that.

If you lived in NO you would understand the post a lil better The city is already falling apart and we might just need a major cane so that we can rebuild. It's typical to wake up and turn on the news to hear about 2-3 murders and a shootout that occured overnight. Our politicians are just as bad. The only problem is that SE LA may be wiped off the map completely.

I highly recommend that those who are interested read the following article. It pertains to what will happen WHEN the big one strikes New Orleans.

Jason,
I live in New York...30 miles east of NYC, where 2-3 murders a night is a good day (ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you can understand where I'm coming from). And there are some "suburbs" here that are warzones. I still wouldn't wish that on ANYONE. I can understand where you're coming from, but still...
BTW, NYC and environs do have some "doomsday" scenarios. It's highly unlikely, but if a CAT III ever made it up the coast just to the west of NYC, you'd have death and destruction unlike any ever seen from a weather event (well, maybe not the Bangladesh floods of 1970). "The City" (what we call it) is a s---hole, in many areas, but still, I'm not wishing a 20' storm surge flooding the subways and inundating the barrier islands.
Don't take this the wrong way...I'm not trying to be argumentative, and I think you Rob & Kevin do some awesome research and impart that to the non-mets like myself trying to learn. It's just that when I think 'urban renewal' and 'infrastructure improvements' it's not usually due to an act of nature.
PEACE Mi Amigo,
LI Phil

New Orleans isn't called the murder capitol for nothing...NYC is getting better and the murder rate SHOULD be higher due to the extent of the population. It's simply ridiculous down here. Steve and I are not exactly being serious....but it may be the only way this city has a chance.

Jason,
I know that you guys aren't being totally serious. BTW, I like your Avatar! My village lost some 15 people during the attacks, (of which I personally knew three). Was kinda hard going to funerals with no body. Also, my cousin's husband was killed in the attacks.
That's kinda why I'm a tad sensitive to "events" restructuring major cities.
Have a good e'ning.

I gave a lot of leeway on this one, but it has drifted a long way from the Storm Forum description. It's time to close this particular thread.
