heat wave
      #76112 - Fri Aug 10 2007 09:53 PM

worth noting when your closest weather station ties its all-time high. bush field reg. airport at augusta got to 108 today, which it has only ever touched once before. knew it might be close to getting there on the ride home... car thermometer is usually within a couple degrees of the real temp when moving, and it read 107-110 on the way home today. it's been 100 or greater every day here since sunday. tomorrow is forecast to get into the upper 90s.
other parts of the state--greenville-spartanburg international got to 105 which is it's new all-time high. columbia metro got to 107, which ties it's all-time high. the state record is 111--have to wonder if any of the co-op stations will offer a challenge.
this is the hottest weather i've ever experienced.

I've been tracking this heat wave over at another forum and it's been particularly brutal for your area, HF, but then again that always seems to be the area that bears the brunt of the heat when it comes. At the start of last week, I anticipated highs in the mid 100s would be commonplace, though I didn't quite figure on these numbers approaching the upper 100s. Never underestimate what relatively parched SOIl can do for high temperatures.

Here in Tallahassee, we've hit 98-99 regularly the past few days with obscenely high dewpoints. When we hit 100+ earlier this year, we mixed most of our low level moisture out, resulting in dewpoints near 60. This time, dewpoints have been in the mid to upper 70s, resulting in heat indices over 110F. Even now, after 1am, it's still 83 with a dewpoint of 78. Positively brutal, though at least we have had some rain this week to keep us from drying out again.

We are having the same sort of heat here in the Tampa area with very high temps and extremely uncomfortable dew points. Does this give anyone the feeling that the GOM is getting ready to explode when the upper level conditions and moisture combine with the evergy from that hot water? The heat must be sifting down to deeper levels as well. The gulf beach water was almost uncomfortably hot 4 weeks ago when I last went...I can hardly imagine what it is like now. All that is needed is the right triggers and we could have a couple of monsters develop (and maintain) out there.....

so far... 7 new record highs (**), 3 ties (*). 1 new high is a tie of the august monthly and all-time station record ( *** ).

forecast has a couple more days near 100 then cooling off in the weekend and next week. GFS is showing the ridging persisting, though, with 500mb heights over 594dm but for a brief respite around sunday... and little precip in the area. after a week they start to fall back to normal and the ridge is shown dying out. whether this will work out with a hurricane pumping it... and considering the tendency of models to generalize features past a few days... i wouldn't be surprised if the heat keeps dragging on. gotta admit, though.. the records get tough to break next week. i'll update this thread with the actual numbers as august plods on.

okay, that's it for august... pretty telling that the only day of the month the temperature wasn't above normal was august 3rd. think we just scored the hottest august for the station.

Here's a list of consecutive 100-degree days during this heat wave ...

The following cities extended their streaks today (8/18):

Muscle Shoals, AL - 12 days (ties record)
Jackson, TN - 12 days
Memphis, TN - 9 days
Tupelo, MS - 9 days
Dyersburg, TN - 8 days
Nashville, TN - 7 days (11 of last 12 ... and 14 straight at 99+)

The following cities appear to have had their streaks end today (unofficially):

Montgomery, AL - 12 days (record)
Tuscaloosa, AL - 11 days (record)
Huntsville, AL - 10 days (tied record)

A few other 100-degree day stats ...

Augusta, GA (Bush Regional) - 12 of last 14
Macon, GA - 10 of last 12
Birmingham, AL - 11 of last 12
Anniston, AL - 11 of last 12
Columbia, SC - 11 of last 14
Atlanta, GA - 8 of last 11

I'll try to keep this updated as the heat figures to continue into the coming week ...

It would appear all the cities mentioned in the above post fell short of 100 today (8/19) ...

Still, a few more impressive facts ...

Nashville, TN reached at least 99 for the 15th straight day (ENDED 8/20)
Memphis, TN reached at least 95 for the 20th straight day (the record is 21 set in 1980)
Paducah, KY reached at least 95 for the 18th straight day (tying the record set in 1941) (ENDED 8/20)

UPDATE 8/21:
Nashville topped 95 for the 20th straight day, breaking the record of 19 (June 1952)
And Memphis extended their 95+ streak to 22, breaking the record

With the heat wave rebuilding over the Southeast after a couple "cool" days I updated the above post and came up with some more numbers ...

Columbia, SC and Augusta, GA - 14 and 15 (respectively) days 100+ this August, breaking an August record. Record for any month is 17 (July 1993)
Birmingham, AL - 13 days 100+ this August, breaks the record for any month (12 - Sept. 1925)
Montgomery, AL - 14 days 100+ this August (record for any month is 14 - Aug. 1954)
Louisville, KY - 22 straight days 90+ breaks the record of 21 (Aug. 1936) ENDED 8/21

UPDATED 8/22
