Surprised nobody started a thread on this cyclone. A tropical cyclone hasn't caused such a mass casualty event since the last great one struck Bangladesh in 1991. The repressive and idiotic government in Myanmar is definitely not helping things... things like disease, exposure, malnutrition and such are going to start scything down the survivors in Irrawaddy delta unless they let other countries get in there with aid.
They don't get a whole lot of tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal, but the geography and huge vulnerable populations down there make them deadlier than most any other type of natural disaster. At least 350-400k people have died in coastal areas in that part of the world since 2004.

Unfortunately, Nargis illustrates how tropical cyclones can quickly become social and humanitarian disasters, in some cases overshadowing the destructive power of the meteorological event itself.

Looking at the extent of inland flooding in this picture is remarkable:
