Event 'last island' hurricane (by HanKFranK)
     on this day in 1856, a compact, extremely intense hurricane struck near grand isle, louisiana. based on known cases of small-size, intense hurricanes it may have been a category five (the best track record indicates a cat 4). its unexpected arrival resulted in hundreds of lives lost.
