Event Bob strikes New England (by HanKFranK)
As of the time of this writing, Bob is the most recent hurricane to strike southeastern New England. On the afternoon of this day in 1991 the storm barrelled ashore near Newport, RI, as a category 2 hurricane--having weakened slightly from it's peak as a category 3 the previous night. Winds were generally around 100 MPH at landfall (105 MPH at Block Island, just offshore). Bob was losing tropical characteristics at landfall. The storm inflicted around 1.5 billion in property damage and killed 17 people.
