DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Kate was located near latitude 36.8 North, longitude 60.5 West. Kate is racing toward the east-northeast near 45 mph (72 km/h). A slower motion toward the east-northeast to northeastward is expected during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds remain near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Kate is expected to lose tropical characteristics by early Thursday, but remain a powerful cyclone during the next couple of days. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 985 mb (29.09 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells from Kate will continue to affect Bermuda through tonight.
