DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM AST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 16.0 North, longitude 33.6 West. Helene is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed through tonight. A turn toward the northwest and then north-northwest is forecast on Wednesday and Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is possible during the next 12 hours, but a gradual weakening trend is expected after that time. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 968 mb (28.59 inches).
