Bonus Point Question
      #33416 - Thu Sep 30 2004 08:15 PM

Who said this and to whom was it said:

"You'd be amazed the number of people who wanna introduce themselves to you in the men's room."

Hint. It was said on a talk show and it pertains to an event occurring in Coral Gables tonight...

It doesn't belong on the main board, but this is the E&N forum.

And yes, I'm going to be watching the debate.

We're hosting a debate party...well, sort of. We don't have cable yet so we're going to try and get it with rabbit ears (not the ones to the left) and watch it with our Jeanne refugees. Should be interesting.

I agree that we could have some political dialogue between storms and off the main board.

Just keep in mind that everyone is entitled to their position and that political discussion is not for the thin skinned.

Well, this turned into quite the thread...

Same rules apply as those on the main thread...no cussin' and no attackin'

But let's NOT make this a debate blog...only post relevant comments...no comments on Mrs. Kerry's weight or W's malaprops...

Having served as a soldier in the U.S. Army and as a U.S. Marine, I was outraged when I saw the most recent John Kerry campaign commercial (and now his comments in the debate) blaming President Bush for the death of servicemen and women and the kidnap and murder of Americans in Iraq. While tragic, folks working in or visiting these areas have a reasonable expectation of some great harm coming to them.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, there is a country that has an average of 800,000 child abductions each year. This country had 16,420 murders and 198,850 incidents of rape or sexual assault in 2003. Guess what AmericaÖ Itís YOU. Where is the outrage for these statistics? Why isnít the media covering this information? The people represented by these statistics had a reasonable expectation that they could go about their daily routine without the threat of violent crime, yet deaths in Iraq pale in comparison to what is happening right here at home.

I suggest that Kerry pick a real issue to go after a sitting president with. It is a miracle that only 1,000 service men have died in Iraq since the end of major combat operations while 16 times that number have been cut down right here at home in half the time.

I think Mr lehers has a tad more maroon. At the beginning of this debate I thought ol "w" was choking a lil but he has obviously gotten over it. Thats what I like about Bush, he tells it like it is. I truly think he's honest and sincere.

Kerry sure is writing a lot of checks. I don't know how he plans to pay for 2 new divisions for the army and then fund all his other international and domestic programs.

Sounds like a tax increase.

Domestic will be brutal. While there has been significant measurable improvement in our economy, there are major pockets around the nation that remain behind.

Tough sell. Most of these pockets are in battle ground states.

The link is for electoral votes and not popular votes that's a different ballgame.

What is there, 538 electoral college votes all together? How is that number arrived at?

Actually, it's quite simple...

The number of electoral votes for each state is arrived at by calculating the number of Senators and Representatives from that state...the smaller states, like Montana & Wyoming, have 3 EVs; one Rep & 2 Senators (every state has 2 senators). The larger states, like NY, CA & TX, which have many Reps, have more EVs...thus, one can win the presidency simply by winning a majority in the most populus 19 states!

Remember, we do not live in a "true" democracy, but a Republic.

Which is why the founding fathers didn't quite trust the "rabble" (common man) to determine the fate of the nation, but to those representing the common man in the electoral college. This is why Gore, who won the popular vote, is not president today.

This is why the pols are spending the rest of the next week in Michigan, Florida & Ohio (and Pennsylvania). Because of the "winner take all" set up, if you win 50.1% of the vote in any of these states, you get their entire electoral vote.

Maybe the system needs changing...I'm not going down that path right now...but it's the system under which we play right now...and, if you ask me, it's worked pretty good since 1783.

JFK vs GWB! It's all good baby!

I feel they should weigh the popular votes .25% less compared to the electoral votes. We have a lot of dumb people out there, and the countries faith should not be in those people's hands. Just my thoughts...

>>> countries faith

Think you mean FATE...although...Separation of Church & State, that's why this is such a GREAT Country!

Actually, and this will be my last post for a couple hours, it all goes back to a wonderful book written by Alexis de Tocqueville, "tyranny of the majority" which has been the major argument against such for the past 200 or so years.

It's always sour grapes for the loser of the election...of the popular vote...however, it's only happened 2 times in 228 years...so it's not usually a problem.

Damn J-E-T-S are about to lose a crusher to the Patsies... and I gotta go have dinner with my folks... back on here in 1-2 hours, if anyone is interested...
