How many annular hurricanes have there been?
      #75418 - Wed Jun 06 2007 07:08 PM

I was wondering how many annular hurricanes there have been. The only three I can think of are:

* Hurricane Isabel ( 2003, Atlantic)

* Hurricane Epsilon ( 2005, Atlantic)

* Hurricane Daniel ( 2006, East Pacific )

* Typhoon Longwang ( 2006, West Pacific )

You can add Hurricane Epsilon in 2005. It had all the features of an annular hurricane even at its extraordinary latitude.

There was a paper on annular hurricanes that came out in 2003, looking at both the East Pacific and the Atlantic, primarily the former. I think they identified about 8 of them over a 6-8 year span, but don't quote me on that. Generally once per year over the two basins, it seems, and not all of them were the ones that remained annular for an extended time as did Isabel.
