Here is a link to some photos I took at the Hurricane Hunter Open House in Panama City today. Stacy (Da MAN) Stewart from was there, and it was a pleasure to meet him and interview him for our noon news.

De Plane...de plane. I do have a question. I'm not afraid to fly, but I freak at even the slightest turbulence, so there's no way in HeLl I'd go for a recon flight...but, I know many others on this board would (Frank P. comes to mind). Would you fly with the Hurricane Hunters if you could? BTW, since they were there, did the or any Hunters explain what it would take for a 'civilian' to hop a flight? What about a met such as yourself? Cuz it sure would be neat if you or anyone else for that matter from this board was able to fly some recon and then give us all a firsthand account of it. Some cool photos from your page.

Not only would I but I have....Danny 97, in a WC-130 AFR Hunter. I am tenatively on the list to take a P-3 Ride this year as well...we'll see.
As far as civilians, you must be a member of the working press, or affiliated with NOAA, and sign your life away to get a ride. However, from the looks of the interior, you aren't missing much in creature comforts...lol

Oh, man...I'll bet a lot of folks on this board would kill for the opportunity. I'll leave it to you if you want to describe the flight, but one last question: what storm did you fly into? Anything memorable or was it a fish-spinner, or just an average 'cane?

Bobbi,
Those "chill pills" just might end up in the "gag bag" in the outer bands. LOL

Hurricane Danny, 1997....made landfall near Orange Beach, AL...Cat 1 at the time of my flight...flew several passes at about 10k ft. A little bumpy, but not as bad as I had envisioned. Danny wasn't the classically structured storm as far as interior configuration, but it was a fun ride nonetheless.

Actually, They tell me that the stronger hurricanes are smoother rides that the Cat 1and 2's. The flow around the stronger storms is more even and less turbulent, so it is actually a better ride (and more scenic too).

The discussion on the site pretty much shunts the system east leaving me high and dry in Miami. They mention a dry ULL moving southeast in the Gulf that will push the moisture towards Puerto Rico/Cuba. We need some rain here I hope there not right.

Actually, JK, my comment was somewhat tongue in cheek, as the flight (s?) into Hugo have become the stuff of lore for the ferocity with which Hugo treated the plane and crew. For anyone who's interested in a first-hand account, here's a link. It's pretty long, but a nice read.

No mention of any kind of development in the 8:05pm TWD. I figured they may mention something of it after looking at some of the models indicating possible development. Guess we will see.

JamieWeather,
Welcome aboard. These boards are unusually active for this time of year, but, then again, if Steve is correct in his reading of the models, we may well have a TS on our hands by this weekend. At least it seems an invest will be in order by Friday. Go ahead and make some predictions (see the Storm Forum).
Peace,
LI Phil

Thanks for the welcome, i've actually been viewing and posting as an unregistered user since last year. LI Phil do you know a good website that has a listing of all the Tropical/Hurricane Models. Also Ed mentions the SHIPS model forecast bringing the disturbance to TS strength by Thursday. Where does he go to find that information? I need to learn all the neat sites that you guys use to aid you in making predictions.

Well, that's just great. I just composed a 1,000 word essay on where you could go for some models. And then the computer "ate" my homework. Anyway, I had first suggested you start with this forum...the "Storm Links" page under "CONTENT" has probably most of the sites you are looking for. Failing that, I found a miraculous site a short while back, 600 hurricane links that will lead you to most of what you seek. Tomorrow, when I'm at (cough, cough) work, I'll post some more specific links, just don't have the access to them at home at the moment. Enjoy
