There was a 5.8 mag earthquake about 251 miles WSW of Bradenton, FL in the Gulf of Mexico less than an hour ago. I am wondering if we are vulnerable to tsunamis around the gulf and Tampa bay???

Most of the Gulf isn't very condusive to tsunami impacts due to the shape of the coastline and duration of any tsunami fetch. Local NWS offices will warn for one, however, if the need arises -- the infrastructure is in place for that.

Well a tsunami is really not a Weather Event, however, if a local warning has not been issued, there will not be anything much to see - usually takes about a 7.0 to trigger a tsunami, but not always.
Since the sea wave travels at the speed of sound in (deep) salt water (about 680mph). Even at 500mph in the Gulf, by the time you read this, if its going to happen - it already has (for your location).

An 8+ shallow earthquake off of the Yucatan has been modeled to produce a water rise of about 20" in Apalachee Bay, which is the peak of the possibilities. Not sure about other parts of the Gulf, but I'm not sure the threat is overly significant. Noticeable? Sure, and that's why the warning system is in place -- well, that, and the unexpected.

I was in Walmart and thought the delivery truck had hit the building(bumped it) Sales clerks thought it was the space shuttle. I just thoght they were behind on the news did not connect the two until I got home.

I was sitting in my chair in my home office and felt a very slight shaking that lasted maybe 5 seconds.

Per Collier County Emergency Management, there are no tsunami warnings. However, they have advised that the USGS is asking anyone who felt the earthquake to complete a questionnaire:
The USGS wants to know if you felt today's (Sunday's) arthquake. If you did, cut-n-paste the entire URL, below, into your browser & fill out the report at this site:

The earthquake earlier today was measured by the Dart II buoy- 42408.
USGS Epicenter of 26.327°N, 86.571°W
NDBC buoy 42408_25.41 N 86.80 W

We're in Rotonda on the Cape Haze peninsula, not far from the water (not even 2 miles) and I never felt a thing.
I was shocked when they announced it!

After the Indonesian Christmas quake, on one of the shows I watched about it, if I remember correctly, not all underwater quakes will cause tsunamis either. There's certain ones that will. I can't remember the differences though.

We felt it here in Spring Hill. Just some shaking/vibrations for about 7 seconds.
